And we’re off

Karla: There’s a beautiful, tranquil sunset occurring outside my motel window here in Anacortes. Ferries are persistently chugging across the harbor and birds are wheeling high above the water’s surface. Amazingly, the mood mirrors my innermost feelings. At last we will begin…

Scott: Holy freaking cow, our journey begins tomorrow. Anacortes, WA to Bar Harbor, ME. 4,000 miles and 3 months of riding our tandem sharing sweat, joy, pain, laughter, tears, fear, the spectacular sights and people of the northern United States. We’ll ride through Washington, Idaho, Alberta Canada,  Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ontario Canada, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine following Adventure Cycling’s Northern Tier + North Lakes bike route. We owe a big thank you to Dave Klug who rode with us to Anacortes today then drove our car back home to Portland after unloading us with our tandem and trailer. There’s no turning back now. We’ll try to blog as frequently as we can but expect that there will be gaps when we are too tired or have no connectivity. When we blog we’ll add another point in the map so that you can follow our progress.

  1. Scott and Karla, what are you using for a computer? Or are you using a smartphone? Do you have 3G or are you going to rely on occasional WiFi? I've always wondered how cross country riders do such a nice job on blogs.

  2. Scott, good work to you both for starting this journey. If you never stop when things are difficult, then you'll make it the entire way! I love the Nomad trailer for touring. It tows like a dream, albeit a heavy dream. I think a picture of your set up is in order for your millions of anxious viewers.

  3. Ted – We have our smart phones but the prospect of blogging from a smart phone drove us to also carry our netbook (our travel computer).

Jarred – We posted a picture of our rig on FB about a week ago. Check it out there. But never fear, there will be plenty of tandem + trailer pics in the months to come.

  4. Hi Kids – I'm jealous already. Looking forward to reading all about it ! Love, Sharon PS since I don't know what any of the "Comment As" things mean, I guess I'll just be Anonymous.

  5. Well, this is a re-creation of the comment I left which the posting process deleted.

Watch out for slow walking zombies, which, from what I gather watching films and TV, seem to be everywhere now.

Otherwise have fun (but not with zombies).

  6. Holy freaking cow is right! Can't wait to follow your adventures… You guys are living the dream!

  7. You're off! Hope your first day riding was easy going. We are thinking of you, our new heros! Will be looking for lots of updates. A rocking chair experience for sure!
    Love you,

  8. I look forward to traveling with you. Keep a watchful eye and be safe. Love Your Sister, Lori
